Hi, this is Doctor Parker, and I get asked a lot about how laser works to remove tattoos. So essentially, a tattoo is pigment that’s been deposited into the skin, and a laser will break up these kind of boulders of pigment, because that’s really what it is. It’s actually a solid. And it breaks up those huge, gigantic boulders of pigment that are trapped in the dermis. And it allows the macrophages, which is kind of our clean up cells in our body, to eat away the smaller little particles of the tattoo and carry them away, and they’re eliminated by the body.

A big question is how many tattoo removal laser treatments do I need to remove this tattoo? And the truth of it is, is we don’t know. Pigment isn’t FDA approved. We have no idea what’s in it, and we don’t know how much of the pigment has been deposited in any tattoo. And that will determine how many treatments that we need in addition to what is in the pigment itself. And some pigments respond really well and others are a little bit more stubborn, requiring extra sessions.
