A common question we receive at Radiance is: How does Botox actually work? Dr. Colleen Parker explains.
The answer is simple — Botox works by stopping the repetitive muscle movements that damage your skin over time.
For example, consider the horizontal lines that form across your forehead. If those lines bother you, it’s because the muscle underneath contracts every time you lift or raise your eyebrows. Every single time your eyebrows go up—whether intentional, subconscious, or just a natural expression—the skin above that muscle folds to accommodate the contraction. This repeated motion causes the skin to buckle or bend in the same spot again and again.
Over time, this repetitive bending creates a crease or wrinkle. In fact, a wrinkle is essentially an overuse injury to your skin caused by constant muscle contraction.
Botox treatments work by relaxing those overactive muscles.
When we stop the muscle from contracting, the skin above it remains still. When the skin stays still, your body naturally begins to repair the tiny breaks in the dermis that have formed over the years. Even if you have had wrinkles for 20 years, with consistent Botox treatments, you can see those lines soften and even fade away.
Botox injections use a very fine needle—similar in size to an acupuncture needle—making the procedure quick and comfortable. With regular administration, Botox helps to prevent further trauma to your skin and supports your body’s natural healing process, giving you smoother, more youthful-looking skin.

What Dr. Parker Wants You To Know About Botox:
- Botox is better for the prevention of fine lines and wrinkles than it is to correct them.
- Botox has a safer FDA indication than Tylenol.
- Botox must be done every 3-6 months and is not a “one-and-done” treatment.
- If you think you’ll look “frozen” after Botox, the product is effective, and your injector has to be too!
- We don’t use Botox on anyone pregnant or breastfeeding.
- We have many patients with needle phobias who still come in regularly for Botox treatment because the results are THAT GOOD.
- Botox may help you appear less stressed, less worried, less angry, or less sad when used in specific areas of the face for a more relaxed and youthful appearance.
- Botox can help make your skin look smoother and softer because it suppresses sebum production, which can cause acne or textured skin.
- Botox can also be used therapeutically to relieve pain caused by TMJ, teeth grinding, and migraines.
- Botox can treat excessive sweating in areas such as the hands, feet, and underarms.
