Eventually, we all get these fine lines around our lips as we age. Dr. Colleen Parker explains.
At Radiance Medical Aesthetics and Wellness Spa in Williston, VT, one of the most common concerns I hear from patients is about “smoker lines” around the lips. While these lines are often more prominent and appear earlier in individuals who smoke, the truth is that most of us will eventually experience them as part of the natural aging process.
So what causes these fine lines to form? A major factor is the gradual loss of fat in and around the lips. The lips contain unique fat pads that help provide structure and support to the overlying skin (dermis). These fat pads are different from the subcutaneous and visceral fat elsewhere in the body that fluctuates with diet and lifestyle choices.
As we age, these specialized fat pads begin to diminish. Without their structural support, the lips can start to roll inward or invert. This leads to the tightening and contracting of the skin around the vermilion border (the red part of the lips). The repetitive action of the surrounding muscles causes the skin to fold and crease, forming the vertical lines we refer to as smoker lines.
What Can Be Done About Smoker Lines?
The most effective non-surgical treatment to reduce lines around lips is hyaluronic acid dermal fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found in the body and is safely metabolized over time.
