We typically don’t see the effects of sun damage until long after it’s already occurred. That’s why it’s important to have a good skin treatment after summer to stimulate your skin’s repair systems and prevent future damage. Our skin heals, and for the most part, we go back to looking the same as we did before (maybe with a nice tan or cute freckles too). But what happens once we’ve accumulated years, even decades, of sun damage? It seems as if it happens overnight. Years of sun damage gradually appear in various conditions, leaving us with brown and red spots we could have sworn were not there before. That’s why it’s essential to take proactive measures to reverse this damage, and one of the most effective treatments is incorporating regular chemical peels into your skincare routine.
Chemical peels are great to have regularly, and it’s especially beneficial to start them in the fall after we’ve accumulated sun damage from the summer months. Regular chemical peels improve skin longevity, as they help prevent a build-up of damage caused by the sun’s rays that can eventually turn into precancerous or cancerous skin cells.
What do Chemical Peels Do?
Peels can help improve skin concerns caused by damage from internal and external factors, including the sun. Aging caused by sun damage, also referred to as photoaging, breaks down cellular function in the skin, causing it to “malfunction” and presents what we see on the surface as pigmentation, age spots, sagging skin, enlarged pores, and textural concerns. Chemical peels are great because they can penetrate below the surface of the skin to help promote cellular turnover and collagen stimulation, resulting in skin that can function properly and look smoother, healthier, and brighter for longer.
Why Have Chemical Peels In The Fall?
As we head into the fall and winter months with less exposure to the sun’s harmful rays, this is prime time to start the treatments which require you to be cautious of sun exposure before and after. Chemical Peels are one of these treatments. Seasons with lower UV rays and less heat are optimal conditions for your skin to get the most out of your chemical peel. Remember, you cannot have a chemical peel if you are sunburned or have had extensive sun exposure prior to your scheduled treatment!
Summer & Photosensitivity
You only get one body, and we tend to focus on tending to the internal to stay healthy and prolong good health, but what about the external? Your skin is your largest body organ and happens to be both internal and external! Skin is typically more susceptible to damage when exposed to the sun. That is why many of our skin treatments require you to limit sun exposure post-treatment. When there’s less risk of sun exposure, you’ll be able to let your skin repair to the best of its ability, ensuring optimal results from your treatments. Having chemical peels in cooler months helps significantly decrease your chances for photosensitivity to occur. The last thing we want is for you to invest in a skincare treatment and have UV light from the sun’s strong rays potentially damage your skin rather than revitalize it. At Radiance Medical Aesthetics and Wellness Spa in Williston, VT, we ensure you are equipped with all the necessary guidelines for the best treatment results!
Before & After
Be Proactive
As much as we all love taking advantage of the short-lived Vermont summer days (with SPF, of course!), we are now heading into the season of “back to school,” family holidays, social events, and kids’ activities where you will want to look and feel your best. Starting a series of chemical peels now will allow ample time for a number of treatments so you can see transformative results by the time the holidays and all of your winter festivities come around. A series of face peels is recommended for optimal results (3-5 treatments) and can be done every four weeks.
Maintaining healthy skin through proactive care is the key to preventing further skin damage that can lead to the degradation of overall health, such as skin cancer or inflammation. How can we prevent this further damage? Through treatments, such as chemical peels, that stimulate and maintain collagen, elastin, and hydration in the skin. These components improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while mitigating the harmful effects of sun damage and aging.
What To Expect During and After a Chemical Peel
Depending on the strength of the peel, you will experience mild flaking and dryness to light peeling, typically starting on days 2-3. For most people, chemical peels are completely tolerable. Expect to experience tingling, itching, and/or a warming sensation that will only last a few minutes at most. Post-care includes using a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and a physical-only SPF. And yes, even here in Vermont, you still need to wear sunscreen all year round, including the cooler and less sunny months of the year! Your local Esthetician at Radiance Medical Aesthetics and Wellness Spa in Williston, VT, can advise you on what is best to use for your specific skin type to ensure optimal and prolonged results.
